Therapy dog training versus Pet Therapy

I have learned a few things during our classes. (Who says “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?”) One, Pet Therapy training is an “old” and somewhat misleading term. Pet Therapy tends to conjure up the image of a dog on a couch recounting a dysfunctional puppyhood. So the appropriate terms are Animal-Assisted Activities or Animal-Assisted Therapy. This, of course, is to clarify that the animal (not necessarily a dog, could be a bunny, cat or even a llama) is there to assist a patient in the healing process or to provide comfort.

The other thing I learned is that Therapy Dogs do not have the same rights as Service Dogs. So, say I get a nice little vest for Sienna that clearly states that she is a Therapy Dog, she can only wear it when she is working. If I were to use it to take her grocery shopping with me, we could lose our registration. So there we have it!

She did well today, just a few things to work on but we are on our way!

A new path

Today we began a new path as far as training for Sienna goes.

We got the results back and Sienna’s left hip came back with “mild hip dysplasia” which means that I can’t breed her. So she is now fixed and working on her certification as a Therapy Dog. And lucky her, I’m her partner. Together we are taking an 8 week course to learn how to give comfort to those who are sick, hurting, healing or dying. Today was our first class and I enjoyed it immensely, I think she enjoyed getting the attention. I really believe that this is going to be a fantastic thing for her, she is so loving and nurturing to people that I think that she will excel in this program. And, even though I think she is the most beautiful and obedient Chessie ever, it doesn’t matter here. Looks don’t count and while she needs to be well behaved, there will be times when her goofy behavior will be just the medicine the doctor ordered.

I do have one question though, if we are partners and we are going through this together, then why to I have the homework assignment?
